1. Full time instrumental music teaching in Glasgow schools
(Brass instruments and guitars)
Duties include - Timetabling, budgeting for instruments, music and equipment,producing inventories, etc.
I also coach several ensembles in these schools. I have completed over forty arrangements
for these groups using Cubase and Logic software packages and have also recorded and
produced several C.D.s using computers and audio workstations.
Successes have been achieved recently by three groups, shown in a regional competition, performance abroad and with a recent invititation to record a professional demo recording at a Glasgow studio.
 
 
 
 
 
2. Freelance work as a trombonist and additional work as an instrumentalist and composer in various settings.

2. Freelance work as a trombonist with professional symphony, ballet, opera and theatre
orchestras, with additional work as an instrumentalist and composer in various settings.
Activities include recording a soundtrack of "Star Wars" with the Royal Scottish Orchestra,
providing early music for the premier of "Braveheart", performing with Tommy Smith's SNJO,
and playing on television themes such as "Scotsport" and "The Kirsty Wark Show".
 
 
 
 
 
3. I was also commissioned to compose pieces of music for "The Representative band of the Norwegian Armed Forces" and as part of the South Lanarkshire Council's "Artsnet" project.
 

Aug 1992 - Aug 1995
1. Temporary appointments as an instrumental teacher. These include long term contracts with Fettes College in Edinburgh and Glasgow City Council, and deputy teaching at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama Junior Department. I coached ensembles in each of these posts.
 
2. Freelance work as described under Performing Experience.
3. Presented and performed in educational packages in early music and jazz which toured primary and secondary schools, community centres and festivals from Carlisle to Shetland.
 

Oct 1990 - July 1992
1. Instrumental teaching for Glasgow City Council, including ensemble coaching. Prior to Sept 1991 I taught for four days per week. I retained two days while studying for the Mmus at Glasgow University.
 
2. Freelance work as a performer and composer.

July 1986 - July 1987
1. Sorting and delivering mail in the Post Office, Aberdeen, while continuing my studies privately.
 
2. I continued to perform in various ensembles.
PERFORMING EXPERIENCE

Freelance work as a trombonist with The Royal Scottish Orchestra, Scottish Opera,
Scottish Ballet,The BT Scottish Ensemble, The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra,
and The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra.

Engagements with The Scottish Early Music Consort and HADT playing sackbut, shawm, crumhorn, etc.

Further employment comes from engagements in theatre orchestras, chamber groups, early music groups,jazz and rock groups including work as a bass guitarist. These include concert performances, touring productions, lecture recitals,television and radio broadcasts and CD recordings.

Music and I.T.
I have been using music software since 1990. I am a fluent user of Cubase software as a producer of notation, as a midi tool and as a multitrack audio recorder.
I also use other music packages such as Logic, Peak etc on Macintosh and PC platforms.
Recording
Along with a colleague I have set up a project studio based around a Macintosh with a Pulsar II card and a Mackie Mixing Desk.
Used in conjunction with outboard mixer and effects we have produced recordings of
various groups including rock bands, an orchestra and a brazilian percussion ensemble.
Composition/arranging
I have produced many pieces of music for a wide range of ensembles from wind trio to big band. The B.B.C. Scottish Brass Ensemble have performed and recorded my compositions and regularly include one in their concert programme.
Information Technology
The Diploma course provided practical experience in Java, Databases (Oracle/SQL and Access), Flash, HTML,etc. I completed modules in Java, Systems Analysis and Design, Database Information Systems, Multimedia, Information Management, Computer Systems, Networks, Operating Systems and Human Factors.
I have developed good troubleshooting skills on Windows and Macintosh platforms over the years which has proven useful in my work in schools. Good general understanding of many topics such as the internet, networking, peripherals,add-on cards etc. Comfortable user of word processing, web and graphic packages.
Development of Teaching Material
My Mmus thesis is used as teaching material at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
I have written a beginner course for guitar and an instruction book/CD for bass guitar is
in progress. A multimedia CD Rom application on the subject of Recording and Sound Production is currently being developed.
Organisation
I have been active in the running of various ensembles involving the organisation of
musicians for rehearsals, producing marketing material and securing bookings.
Interests
I enjoy cycling, hillwalking, cooking Indian food and reading popular science.
